Nebula Nerd NASA’s Europa Clipper spacecraft embarked on an ambitious journey on October 14, aiming to explore the potential for life on Jupiter’s moon, Europa. Scientists believe that beneath Europa’s icy exterior, conditions may be suitable for life. The spacecraft is set to cover an extensive distance of about 1.8 billion miles to reach Jupiter by the year 2030. During its voyage, the Europa Clipper will utilize gravitational assists by making several flybys of other celestial bodies within our solar system.
Once the spacecraft arrives at Europa, it will commence a thorough examination of the moon. The mission includes 49 close flybys of Europa, during which the spacecraft’s nine sophisticated instruments will analyze the moon’s icy shell, its subsurface ocean, and overall composition. This detailed exploration is scheduled to continue until the mission concludes in 2034.
